Mechanical
Mechanical engineering involves many different routes including analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. You’ll develop a solid understanding of key concepts.
Motor Vehicle
Employment is usually with garages, transport companies, road haulage companies or large organisations with fleets of vehicles. At technician level you’ll perform skilled diagnostic work, including work on electronic and computer controlled systems.
Motor Vehicle Body Repair & Refinishing
The skills involved within body repair and refinishing vary from sectioning panels to valeting, MIG welding and rectifying paint defects. Employment is usually within garages, body shops and the motor sport industries.
Electrical & Electronic
Full time courses provide the first step towards qualified electrician status focusing on the industrial environment and include studying towards City & Guilds technical qualifications.
Pathways to Apprenticeships Programme
The Pathways to Apprenticeships Programme is a flexible route providing the underpinning knowledge and skills required in the industry. Whether you want to study full time, day release or part time, we have a course for you.

DOWNLOADI was all set to study teaching at university but work experience at British Airways completely changed my mind. I loved the hands on aspect so I cancelled my university place and enrolled on a mechanical engineering course. I was nervous at first but the tutors are great and help you learn at your own pace. Now I have the skills to go onto an apprenticeship.

Level 2 Mechanical Engineering

Questions & Answers
Is it correct that level 3 does not do much hands on as level 2?
There is a practical element at all levels. It depends on whether the course is craft or BTEC too.
Do you have any motorcycle courses?
Yes, part time specific to bikes and some content for bikes on the general courses at Crosskeys.
Is there a way I could do a part time course as well as doing a full time course?
It would depend on the hours that the courses ran on and if you could fit them in. You would likely need to pay for the part time if doing both. Most people would not combine both, but it is not impossible.
What are the expectations in terms of grades for the entry level for the automotive technology course?
We do not ask for any specific grades. We just ask for you to be willing to learn with a keen interest in the course.
Is there a way I could do a full time electrical engineering course as well as being in the rugby academy?
Yes, we aim to be flexible to allow you to do this.
Do you need to be good at art for drawings on EEP?
No, Maths, English and Science are the main foundations you need.
Do you offer extended diplomas for motor vehicle on any other campus?
Crosskeys is the only campus for Extended Diplomas.
If I'm looking to do an apprenticeship do I choose BTEC or Craft?
A very good question. You can do either. We don’t supply apprenticeships directly. You can find an apprenticeship and the employer can ask Coleg Gwent to deliver it, or we aim to get you an apprenticeship as part of our EEPs programme.
I'm in year 11, do I apply now?
Yes, apply now to secure your place for September.
Can you study A level Maths along with a level 3 extended diploma?
Yes, this is possible.
Where do you offer electric vehicle training
Crosskeys for cars and hoping to expand to heavy vehicle at Newport.
When is the best time to apply?
Apply as soon as possible to secure your place.
Is the motorsport course full time or part time?
It is a full time course.
Do you get a qualification for the motorbike course?
Yes, we select a suitable level for you.
I'm interested in the extended diploma level 2 motor vehicle in Crosskeys. Can I go to university with this course?
Universities usually ask for level 3 courses for entry. We have a level 3 automotive course at Crosskeys and Motorsport.
